Accessibility & Inclusivity
Oxton Playwrights CIC is committed to making theatre, heritage and creative learning as welcoming, inclusive and accessible as possible.
1
Our Commitment
Oxton Playwrights CIC creates theatre, heritage and creative learning projects that are rooted in community, place and lived experience. We believe that culture should feel open, welcoming and meaningful to as many people as possible.
Our work often takes place in theatres, heritage sites, community spaces and outdoor locations. Because each venue is different, we aim to provide clear information in advance so audiences, participants, schools and community groups can make informed choices about attending or taking part.
2
Making our events accessible
We aim to make our events accessible by:
-
providing clear event information in advance
-
sharing details about venue access wherever possible
-
offering free or low-cost performances where funding allows
-
welcoming access questions before events
-
working with venues and partners to understand access needs
-
using clear language in our marketing and education resources
-
creating relaxed, friendly and supportive spaces for audiences and participants
Where an event takes place in a heritage or outdoor setting, access may vary depending on the site. We will always do our best to explain this clearly and support visitors wherever possible.
3
Inclusivity in our work
Our projects focus on stories that have often been overlooked, forgotten or underrepresented. This includes women’s history, LGBTQ+ heritage, working-class stories, local history and community voices.
Through productions such as The Story of Jessie Gavin and Her Stories of Wirral, we aim to create work that helps people feel seen, represented and connected to the places around them.
We are committed to treating artists, audiences, students, volunteers and community partners with dignity, respect and care.
4
Supporting young people and emerging creatives
We actively create opportunities for students and emerging creatives to gain real experience in theatre and heritage projects. This includes opportunities in performance, costume, set design, photography, social media, production and stage management.
We want young people to feel that theatre and the creative industries are not closed or distant, but something they can understand, contribute to and be part of.
